Smallholding Self-sufficiency

Many people toy with the dream of adopting a self-sufficient lifestyle based upon smallholding. Aware that beneath the image of bucolic bliss, the reality of self-sufficiency is year round hard work, few of us get beyond cultivating a small allotment. Here is your chance to experience fulltime smallholding for an entire year. All students and staff at the Institute will contribute to the routine work of producing food i.e.) cultivating plants, tending livestock, maintaining hedges, harvesting, mending machinery, landscape management and a wide variety of on-site food processing activities. In addition students will learn to build and maintain the range of eco-buildings and associated systems (water, heating, waste management, electricity). Even those students not doing the MSc in Self-sufficient Smallholding will absorb a great deal of practical and theoretical knowledge from the hands-on environment of the Institute.
